“ Skin Deep: The Nautical Roots of Tattoo Culture” ( The Sextant, NHHC’s blog, 1 April 2016) (With contributions from Megan Churchwell, curator, Puget Sound Navy Museum) This, and the increasingly multicultural pool of recruits entering the Navy in the 21st century, led to the liberalization of regulations governing tattoos-the least restrictive among the U.S. The vast expansion of the Navy during World War II laid the groundwork toward greater social acceptance of tattoos and ultimately toward body art's embrace by the mainstream today. Shipboard "artists" also continued to flourish. A number of celebrated tattooists, their names often prefaced with "Sailor" and each propagating a distinctive style, opened shop in ports of call and around naval bases. Tattoos were still largely perceived to be the questionable marks of seafarers, specific blue-collar trades, and of any number of less savory societal groups-and an object of fascination in sideshows and, later, burlesque clubs.ĭesigns of tattoos worn by Navy personnel can be gleaned from early personnel records, in which body art was recorded in the category of “distinguishing marks.” These records also testify to the longevity of motifs still worn by some Sailors today. However, those with body art were to remain somewhat marginalized well into the 20th century. Sailors also sought patriotic tattoos reflecting their enthusiasm for America’s participation in the conflict. This was accomplished by having the offending (usually) female figure “dressed” or another design tattooed over it. By this time, these tattoos had already acquired features recognized today as essential elements of military and patriotic tattoos: the curved scroll with a slogan, name, or date the stars and stripes or a giant eagle backdrop-many of them proliferated thanks to the newly invented electric tattoo machine.ĭuring World War I-in line with the Progressive era’s sense of higher purpose that also abolished alcohol rations in the Fleet-Navy recruits were strongly encouraged to get any risqué art covered up, since perceived "moral" failings might disqualify them from service. In 1898, at the onset the Spanish-American War, Sailors rushed to have the slogan “Remember the Maine” tattooed on their chests before heading out to avenge her sinking. As newly tattooed Sailors returned home at war’s end, the work of Civil War–era tattooists spread around the country. Spurred by 19th-century whaling expeditions and long trading voyages, tattooing continued to spread among both naval and merchant seamen-and from them to landlubbers.ĭuring the Civil War, tattoos commemorating the historic clash between the ironclads USS Monitor and CSS Virginia made their way into both navies, along with more general motifs such as military insignia and names of sweethearts. By the late 18th century, around a third of British and a fifth of American sailors had at least one tattoo. Staving off boredom during long hours at sea, sailors doubled as amateur tattooists. Tattooing spread quickly from British to American sailors. In fact, the word “tattoo” is derived from the Polynesian tatau, which indicated indelibly marking the human body and phonetically imitated the sound of the rhythmic tapping of traditional tattoo instruments (usually needles fashioned from boar's tusks) used to pierce a subject’s skin. These brought tattoos back to their fellow seamen in Europe and America. Although there are indications that seafarers bore tattoos before the 1700s, Captain James Cook’s voyages of exploration in the Pacific during the second half of the 18th century exposed Royal Navy sailors to Polynesian body art. However, there is no dispute that tattooing was practiced in early societies in Europe and Asia, and by indigenous cultures worldwide for thousands of years. Captain James Cook’s journal, third Pacific voyage (1776–80)ĭespite numerous learned studies and analyses of various aspects of tattooing-sociological, artistic, psychological-the actual lore of this form of body art remains largely non-academic and often based on oral tradition centered around certain tattoo artists and styles. “The universality of tattooing is a curious subject for speculation….” She has chaired fundraising events and activities for every school her children attended, as well as The Junior League, Beaux Arts, the American Red Cross, Villagers, Kristi House, the Detroit branch of Women of Tomorrow, Doctors Hospital, Baptist Health System, United Way of Miami-Dade, Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, and The Underline. At times, Aldana recalled Charles Lloyd, using a tone that felt gentle as she explored melodic territory with aggression. The tenor saxophonist’s set, drawn from her recent 12 Stars album, presented the ideal opening act, balancing a pensive delivery with the palpable urge to stretch out within the music. But the excitement level was high from the moment Melissa Aldana led off the day’s program at Highmark. Or the feeling of community generated by sharing space with fellow jazz fans. Maybe it was something to do with sitting on a 360-foot-wide field with a great view of the city behind the stage. This might be personal preference, but the opportunity to be among a crowd seeing live performances in an open-air venue on Saturday afternoon (Sept. Pianist Renee Rosnes sounded especially fiery throughout the evening, angular and aggressive one moment, digging deep into “My Funny Valentine” the next. When Carter hit a double-stop that slid up the neck, the weight and clarity of his tone were breathtaking. It sounded as fresh as ever, coming amid a set that flowed from one tune to the next. The esteemed bassist, still looking youthful at 85, clearly hasn’t grown tired of the iconic bassline he created for “Seven Steps to Heaven” with Miles Davis in 1963. On September 16, the 12th Pittsburgh Jazz Festival kicked off at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center (AWAACC) with a sold-out concert by Ron Carter Foursight. The sound was fine for anyone sitting in the stadium seats, but most attendees opted to get closer, setting up their own folding chairs on the field, shifting between the stages with each act. Admission was no longer free, but a one- or two-day pass granted access to seven acts each day. Last summer, the festival came back with a twist: The two-day event moved across the Monongahela River to Highmark Stadium, with multiple stages set up on the artificial turf field that serves as home to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds soccer team. While the festival, which began in 2011, also featured some indoor ticketed concerts, the outdoor events were free to anyone lured in by the music. Over one weekend in June, Downtown thoroughfares Penn Avenue or Liberty Avenue were closed off to traffic to make room for three stages. Here the same message will be repeated in the speaker so keep the setup function empty and put the commands in loop function. Now define an object ‘value’ to use the commands: Talkie voice #include "Talkie.h" #include "Vocab_US_Large.h" #include "Vocab_Special.h" The Vocab_US_Large.h is used to use the alerts we are using and Vocab_Special.h is used to use the pause we are using. Talkie.h is used to initialize this library and set the Digital pin 3 of Arduino as output pin. There are many other TTS libraries like jscrane TTS library, google TTS library etc. To get those commands, go to the Documents\Arduino\libraries\Talkie\src and then open the header files and get several commands that can be used for different alerts. You can also try other commands given in library. It has several examples, you can try them all but here we are using a simple code to explain the working. This library is very handy and it has over 1000 words and commands. In the search bar type Talkie and click on the install button. Now the Library Manager will be on your screen. To add the library, go to Sketch->Include Library->Mange Libraries. This library is called as Talkie and it can be added by library manager. The program for this Arduino based TTS is also very easy as the library is available for this. The connections are super easy once you make the amplifier circuit.Ĭonnect the power supply to the amplifier circuit and connect the digital pin 3 of your Arduino to 10K resistor and connect the ground of Arduino to ground of the circuit. If you don’t have the exact value of resistors and capacitors then use the close value ones. If you have any confusion about this circuit then check out LM386 Based Audio Amplifier Circuit. Circuit diagram for it is shown below:Ī 100K pot is used to adjust the sound. The amplifier circuit is made by using the IC LM386. Here in this Text to Speech converter, we’ve used an amplifier circuit to reduce the noise and get a clear sound. This step can be achieved by different methods like by recording the human voice for different words/phrases or by generating basic sound frequencies and pile them up as phonemes or by copying human speaking mechanism. The last step is the synthesis of phonemes into spoken voice. This step is really essential so that machine can speak the words as humans do. these are the sounds that make sentences. The phonemes are the small parts of spoken words i.e. The second step involves the conversion of normalized text into phonemes or phonetic transcripts. This step involves the conversion of the symbols, numbers and abbreviations into words that can be read by the machines like ‘?’ will be converted into “question mark”. The first step in TTS is pre-processing or normalization. We previously used TTS with Raspberry pi in speaking Alarm clock and also converted speech into text in raspberry pi by using Google voice keyboard. Today in this tutorial, we will learn how to make Text To Speech converter using Arduino. You can even find the TTS in Microsoft Word where you set it to speak out the text written in the document. There are many examples of Text to Speech conversions like the announcements at public transport, the customer care calls, voice assistants in your smartphones, or the navigation menu of any machine. This tech enables the system to speak out the text in a human voice. Text-to-speech or TTS system converts normal text into Speech. |
